Out of Pocket reimbursement
- - Virtual support failed; a human is preferred.
- - OptumRX denied the claim; Phoenix submission was redirected to Dallas.
I could not get the proper responses to the "virtual" customer service questions. Sometimes a complaint can be handled best with a person to talk with, not an automated system.
My complaint was in rectifying my submission of a Prescription Reimbursement Claim Form. I have submitted this form to CVS Caremark in Phoenix, AZ for over 15 years with any problems.
I received a denial from OptumRX for reasons I do not understand. I resubmitted to OptumRX because my submission to the Phoenix address was redirected to the OptumRX address in Dallas, TX.
User's recommendation: If you are also having problems with GEHA and OptumRX, you will have an opportunity to do something about it next fall during Open Season.

Better training for employees such as this lady answering the phone and dealing with customers. Took this survey-avoid this behavior with future customers especially if they're elderly---call the company and speak to someone--or take this survey.
Rep ended the call I couldn't finish my questions...otherwise I've used this company for years they're pretty consistently reliable.

Verified Reviewer |- - Difficult to renew a prescription at the start of each year.
- - Long holds with Optum Home Delivery and doctors; insurance changes cause confusion.
Worst *** medication delivery service on Earth. It is impossible to get a prescription renewed at the beginning of the year, every single year, even though I've had the same Rx for half a decade now.
How is this so hard? They force you to bounce between sitting on hold with them and sitting on hold with your doctor and never offer any respite or solutions whatsoever. It's like if you don't scream at them over the phone and cry at least twice they don't believe you want your prescription badly enough. God forbid you change insurance, then they've never heard of you, your plan, your medication or your doctor before.
Meanwhile they have 5 different customer service numbers and addresses and will never let you know if there's a discrepancy with any of them.
*** Optum Home Delivery. Expect to fight with them at least a month before your last dose of your medication, and expect to fight nastily.
- Can get meds delivered to your doorstep
- Getting them to acknowledge your prescription is impossible
Preferred solution: Deliver product or service ordered
User's recommendation: Keep calling.

Verified ReviewerNothing more than liars
- - Optum RX blocks my requests and treats med needs like I'm a drug dealer.
- - They asked for my last UA from my doctor, citing Florida privilege.
Every time Ive used Optuim RX ! They always throw up roadblocks!
Im on an opiate medication and they act like theyre serving a drug dealer when I try and get my meds that Ive been on since 2018. Theyre now going even as far calling for my last UA from my doctor. Which is a violation of state law here in Florida with Dr.Client privilege. I just read where they settled the lawsuit against them for antitrust violations against Optim and Scripps.!
They are the worst Pharmacy that Ive ever had to deal with every time you call you get someone different and they try and do something else on Wednesday.
I talked to three different people and they all told me my medication would be here on Thursday when I checked my FedEx app there was no package picked up. It took me until today to get everything straightened out to get my medication.
User's recommendation: I wouldn’t recommend anybody to get in their webs
Awful experience
- - They sent the wrong prescription and couldn't fix it.
- - They charged my credit card without authorization, and there is no human support.
They sent the wrong prescription. It would not correct it.
I even caught it ahead of time and they still couldnt correct it. You cannot talk to a human being and they charged my credit card without my authorization. Awful company. Awful company awful company.
Do not use warning warning do not use. Its a scam.
They will scam you for money. They will provide you the incorrect prescription awful company.
User's recommendation: Do not use them you will regret it
Bad Coverage
- - They won't cover meds unless you use generic.
- - Customer service is difficult.
- - There are many negative online reviews.
- - Stay away if you can.
If you don't use generic (despite it not working well for certain drugs), too bad. They simply won't cover your meds.
It's difficult to get any decent customer service.
The bad reviews all over the internet say it all. Stay away if can.
User's recommendation: Talk your Employer Into a Different Prescription Coverage
I wish I could give them a minus one. Totally disorganized, medication gets there late, you constantly have to call to find out what is happening. They loose prescriptions and prior authorization.
You should get a different mail order company. They take no responsibility for their errors and want you to contact your doctor many times for every order.
User's recommendation: Do not use them. They are frustrating to deal with. I found out my sister has the same problem with them and uses a different health insurance.
Unorganized, meds do not get there on time, never take responsibility for anything
My meds are stuck in Arizona for 4 days. They dont care or even want to help. They lost the prior authorization 2x and now want my doctor to write another order
User's recommendation: Do not use them
Impossible to contact, Rx Not Sent timely, Rx Lost
- - Original order for 3 meds (2-4-25) was never shipped.
- - Two of three meds shipped; re-shipment 2-13-24 via UPS not delivered here.
Original order for 3 meds placed 2-4-25. NEVER shipped.
After I found that out it Took 4 DAYS to get thru the POORLY programmed AI to HUMAN Cust Support. Rx was RE-Shipped 2-13-24 but via UPS which does NOT come here. UPS tracking says Rx is waiting for new delivery date ??? NO clue how to fix that because only the shipper can do that.
Tried to contact OptmumRx about this. It took over an hour & 27 minutes to try and get thru the AI & 7 phone numbers.
Finally got thru to a HUMAN and find that only TWO of the 3 were sent (and no clue why 3rd not shipped). Now Optmum Rx human support trying to figure out what to do next.
WHAT is wrong with this company other than it is attempting to maximise profits for rich investors at the expense of HUMAN employees and HUMAN customers.
By the way - the recommendation box below DOES NOT WORK

SupporterUnable to close my account, and they refuse to delete my sensitive personal information.
- - Transferred CVS prescriptions to OptumRx; charged without notice after transfer; account closure claimed but charges persisted; data deletion refused.
I transferred my prescription service provider from CVS locally to OptumRx mail order services, (877) 889-****. When they began charging me without notifying me, I messaged them to close my account.
The prescriptions kept coming, and the charges on my credit card continued without notifications. Last week, I called and spoke to a representative, Marge, and asked why my account had not been closed. She then said that she had closed it. Today, I received another prescription in the mail and was again charged to my account without my notification.
I went to Optum's website and opened their chat feature to talk with a representative named Princess C.
Several times, I asked her to delete my account and any sensitive information including my credit card information which she refused and continued to evade. I then stated that I would be filing a consumer complaint.
- Refuse to delete your financial information
- Will not let you to close your account
- You never know when your medication is coming
Preferred solution: Close my account and delete my personal and financial information from your website.
User's recommendation: Do not use, as you will never be able to adequately balance your checkbook with this sneaky organization who never notifies you when you are billed..

Verified ReviewerWorst Pharma/Health company in the USA
- - Meds count toward a $5,000 deductible before discounts.
- - 90-day delivery voided coupon; price up to $200.
- - Now 90-day med costs $1,600 before discount.
They wrapped our pharmaceutical medications into our medical deductible. My husband's medication went from $10 per month with a manufacturer coupon to $100 a month.
Optum forced us to switch to a 90-day home delivery, which negated the manufacturer coupon, and then increased that price to $200. Now, we have to meet our $5000 deductible on medications/medical before we get any discount. This means we have to pay full price for his medication which is now $1600 for 90 days. That is an entire paycheck.
We cannot afford his meds. They do not care.
They do not care if their clients die. Do not use Optum.
- Extremely expensive
- Terrible customer servive
Preferred solution: Price reduction
User's recommendation: DO NOT USE OPTUM
To see if my prescriptions got transferred over
- - Switched from Humana to United.
- - An outstanding bill prevents receiving medications.
- - Now must obtain prescriptions from a local provider.
I changed from Humana to United now. I cant get my medication still there because I owe a bill that I wasnt able to pay yet and they wouldnt let me pay payments on it so now I have to get my prescriptions from someone in my own town.
User's recommendation: That I can’t get my medication’s anymore from you guys because evidently I will bill

Verified ReviewerWorst pharmacy i have ever had the experience of dealing with.
- - Many issues and delays with Optum RX in 7 weeks.
- - Copay card not processed, forcing high 90-day fills.
- - No follow-up, no direct contact with pharmacists.
Optum RX is the worst pharmacy company I have ever had the unfortunate experience of dealing with in my life. If I could leave a negative star rating, I would.
I have had so many bad experiences in the short 7-week period that my insurance changed, and I had to switch all my 90-day prescriptions to them from Walgreens as required by my Blue Cross Insurance. I recently changed from Blue cross of Illinois to blue Cross of Kansas City. I went from being able to get all my 90-day prescriptions filled at Walgreens to only being able to get them filled at Optum RX mail order. My life hasn't been the same since.
In the past 7 weeks I have logged somewhere around 2030 hours on the phone with them struggling to get prescriptions filled.
I have a single prescription that I have been on the phone with them for about 10 hours over 8 different phone calls and never have been able to get it filled. It all boils down to a Copay card that they cannot figure out how to process in their system. After repeated calls and countless hours on the phone, they finally were able to determine they do not have the ability to process the Copay card and that I would not be able to use it with them. We only figured this out after I called the manufacturer while I had the customer service person on the phone at the same time trying to figure out what Optum RX was doing wrong.
This means I cannot get my 90-day prescription from my Dr filled without paying a large amount that exceeds my budget to get the medication.
There are a number of issues with this company that just can't be avoided.
1.Every time you call in, you get a different customer service person, and you have to re-explain your problem and give them the same information over and over and over again. There is no type of ticketing system where they can keep track of repeat or follow-up calls for the same issue to check on status or updates.
2.The customer service representatives have very little to no ability to resolve problems directly themselves. They have to take notes or send messages to other departments or people for them to follow up on. I never once received any calls or follow up from anyone on issues that I had called in about once I hung up the phone.
Horrible service. No resolutions to problems.
3.The representatives cannot make outbound calls. So if your call gets dropped, they can't call you back, and you have to start all over again from the beginning with a new call.
4.They lack the ability to allow me to talk directly to the person that I need to talk to for resolving my problem. For example, I cannot talk directly to a pharmacist.
I cannot talk directly to the person that knows why my copay card is not being accepted. Getting real answers from the right person is non-existent.
5.This is a big one. Optum RX DOES NOT handle preauthorization requests with your doctor. I was told repeatedly that I would have to fill out a form and send it to my doctor to have them fill out and send to the insurance company.
This is crazy. I have never had to manage my own preauthorization on prescriptions. This is what my insurance premiums are supposed to be paying for.
6. Their website IS NOT real time up to date.
So status of fills and prices and shipping is not accurate. Sometimes you don't get prices until its shipped, and by that time It's too late to cancel the order if you can't afford it.
7.I had issues with prescriptions that were automatically filled and shipped even though they were not setup for autofill and auto ship. I had several prescriptions that I canceled the same day they started filling these prescriptions. Four days later they shipped them to me anyway without notifying me and without even knowing what the cost was going to be for the prescriptions.
Once they are shipped, you own them and cannot return them. Every time I was on the phone with them, I told them do not ship me any meds without me knowing what the cost is.I've had problems with mail order in the past not applying my insurance and discounts properly and I dont want them shipped unless I know they are processed correctly.
8.Managing your prescriptions with Optum takes a huge amount of time and resources compared to other pharmacies. I constantly had to follow up with them on why my meds were not shipping or not ready or what they were waiting on. They would remain in various statuses for days like they were waiting for someone to look at it.
It was taking days and even weeks to get issues resolved since I had to manage things manually on my own with doctors. I have several that I have never been able to get resolved in the 7 weeks Ive been trying to use them.
9.Their Voice automation system does not work reliably. It does not recognize basic phrases like my birthday. I would have to repeat it 2 or 3 times before it would give up and move on.
Then I would have to give it again to the customer service rep.
10.Optum uses offshore customer service from India. India accent and dialect is very difficult to understand and communicate with. 3 out of 5 times I got the offshore support and went through my lengthy process of explain my problem, they would tell me they dont have access to that information and I would have to be transferred to the Onshore team. Then I would have to start all over again explaining my problem.
11.Because they cannot make outbound calls, they do not have ability to call your doctors or copay card companies to get proper details for processing your prescriptions.
This is a big problem. I was always the one playing the middle man having to make calls to get answers then call them back.
12.They cancel prescription refills with no explanation on the web site and no phone call or contact to explain why. This means another 1 hour phone call to customer service to find out why.
13.I had one prescription they wanted to charge me $225 for. Previously I was paying $30 for this filled at Walgreens for 90 day supply with my Copay card.
Since they could not figure out how to process my copay card, I could only get 30 day supply at Walgreens which was $10. Their pricing just doesn't seem right and since you cant talk to the pharmacy directly, you cant get answers on why.
14. Its not uncommon to spend an hour or longer on the phone every time you call in. Probably 70% of my calls I was on the phone more than an hour, and 5 or 6 times a week.
Who has that kind of time to spend managing their prescriptions every week?
15.There is no compassion or sense of urgency for getting your medications filled when they have let the refills lapse or taken weeks to get them shipped. Constant unexplained delays.
16.Not customer oriented at all.
Bottom line is, AVOID using Optum RX at all costs. You are gambling with your health if you do. Its not worth the time, aggravation, and stress in dealing with this company.
Everything is bad. Very inefficient, poor communication, poor follow up, poor problem solving and resolution, over priced, poor service, poor everything.
I cant find anything good to say about them after using them for only 7 weeks. I cant believe a company like this is even allowed to stay in business or why insurance providers would even use a company like this to provide for their patients.
- All bad
Preferred solution: New pharmacy provider for 90 day prescriptions from my insurance provider Blue Cross of Kansas City

Verified ReviewerOptumRx has no benefits.
- - Pharmacies fail to fill prescriptions on time and ignore doctors orders.
- - Mail order meds found roadside; some prescriptions missing.
OptumRx is absolutely TERRIBLE!!!
The pharmacy's this company partners with (CVS and Fransiscan outpatient) will not fill prescriptions in a timely manner and do not follow the doctors orders on the prescriptions. This company has caused numerous difficulties through the past 2 decades that I have dealt with them.
Mail order prescriptions have been found on the side of the road beneath the mailbox, medications have been miscounted and some prescriptions missing entirely.
I have called dozens of times for help in these matters, to no avail.
Often I just go to the pharmacy I choose to go to and pay out of pocket. One time, about 5 years ago, I was able to get an override to go to see the pharmacist I prefer.
I recently requested to do this again, and was told that it is not possible to go anywhere other than the pharmacies that don't follow doctors orders, or cannot (it's actually, will not) take care of refills in a timely manner.
This Company should be investigated for their unethical practices, false representation of benefits, and blatant fraud.
Far better off without prescription "benefits" and paying out of pocket. I actually save money this way.
- There are no benefits
Preferred solution: My prescriptions filled.

Actually the pharmacy can call your doctor for any reason when filling a prescription for their patient. As could an off-site billing company for the doctor.
HIPAA allows those involved in the diagnosing, treating or collection of payments to be allowed access to private health information. The pharmacy can ask if urinalysis are done on a regular basis if they are filling an opiate. A billing office can contact the doctor and be given the reason for the urinalysis to bill your insurance. Any other doctor you seek treatment from can call your pain doctor for info.
This policy was given to you and they have your signature on file that it was. As far as antitrust cases against them, that has nothing to do with your complaint.
Those are cases where a company tries to hinder competition or behave in a way that allows them to have a monopoly in business. If you rant like this to any of your doctors, pharmacists or billing department, you set off red flags and will find yourself looking for new providers.
You can always be guaranteed when a complaint states “I’m on an opiate....” a list of injustices, grievances and untrue facts will constitute their false narrative.
